Media tycoon Jimmy Lai and veteran activist Martin Lee are among the group of seven people that have been convicted for organizing and participating in an unlawful assembly during massive anti-government protests in Hong Kong two years ago.

"So on this day, in a very difficult situation in Hong Kong, political retaliation is on us. We will still march on no matter what lies in the future. We believe in the people of Hong Kong, in our brothers and sisters in our struggle, and the victory is ours if the people of Hong Kong are persistent," defendant Lee Cheuk-yan was cited as saying by the Associated Press.

Hong Kong's political system entered a new era following the approval of new national security law by the Chinese government in Beijing, which mostly suffocated the region's autonomy.
