United States House Speaker Mike Johnson backed US President Donald Trump's controversial pardons for those involved in the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack, including individuals who violently clashed with police officers.

"We believe in redemption. We believe in second chances," Johnson stressed at a press conference on Wednesday. He expressed confidence in Trump's decisions, noting he doesn't "second-guess" them. "What was made clear all along is that peaceful protests and people who engage in that should never be punished. It was a weaponization of the Justice Department. There was a weaponization of the events following, you know, the prosecution that happened after Jan. 6," he added.

In related news, sources suggested that Trump's administration is considering inviting pardoned individuals to the White House for a meeting with the president.
