United States District Judge Tanya Chutkan has rejected former President Donald Trump's motion to dismiss the indictment in the Washington, DC criminal case, which accuses him of attempting to overturn the 2020 election results. The judge noted that Trump was charged with "knowingly making false statements" about the case.
The former president's legal team sought to have the case dismissed, arguing that evidence, including articles from The Washington Post and The New York Times, suggested President Joe Biden and Special Counsel Jack Smith launched the prosecution to prevent Trump from returning to the presidency.
"But there is no indication that President Biden ever expressed any such comments to the Attorney General or the Justice Department, much less that such comments actually resulted in politically motivated action," the judge wrote in the ruling. Earlier today, the judge scheduled August 16 for both prosecuting and defense attorneys to return to Washington and resume pretrial proceedings.
