European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas said on Monday that the block sees "no role for Hamas in the future governance of Gaza," and underlined that the EU is open to participating in discussions on the future of the Palestinian enclave.
At a joint press conference with Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, Kallas stressed that Israel's security "is extremely important to the EU." However, she pointed out that Israel's renewed attacks on Gaza represent "a dangerous escalation" that is "causing unbearable uncertainty for the hostages and their families and it's likewise causing horror and death for the Palestinian people."
Furthermore, the EU's top diplomat urged both Israel and Hamas to resume negotiations, emphasizing that "violence feeds more violence."
