Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio plans to hold discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping in the context of the political leaders' participation in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, set to be held in San Francisco, Japan's NHK public media reported on Wednesday.

The meeting would mark their first encounter in approximately a year. Kishida's objective is to advocate for Japan's stance on unresolved bilateral matters and foster a constructive relationship with China. To facilitate these talks, the Japanese government intends to send a senior official to China with the aim of scheduling the meeting on Thursday, following Xi's reported meeting with United States President Joe Biden.

The Japanese diplomat previously stated that his country is prepared to establish "stable" and "constructive" relations with Beijing.
