Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida visited on Sunday the Fukushima nuclear power plant ahead of the release of the treated water from the plant into the Pacific Ocean.

At a briefing, Kishida said that "full-fledged safety measures are necessary for long-term decommissioning." He added that he will be having talks with representatives of fishery groups, which have voiced opposition to the government's plans, as soon as Monday, before the exact date of the water discharge is decided on.

Kishida will be meeting with the country's Cabinet ministers on Tuesday to agree on when to release the treated and diluted water. Nikkei previously reported that the process could commence somewhere between late August and early September.
