Lebanese Speaker of the Parliament Nabih Berri announced Thursday that a session for electing a new president will take place on January 9. The announcement follows more than two years of presidential void since Michel Aoun's term ended in October 2022, and comes one day after the start of a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.
Berri had vowed to set a date for the election once the ceasefire was in place. The country has struggled with political paralysis and a lack of clear parliamentary majorities, preventing the election of a new president.
Previously, European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell stressed the importance of a ceasefire before proceeding with the election, underscoring Lebanon’s sovereignty.
