Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa (pictured) announced on Thursday the country will hold a snap general election on May 18 after the government collapsed earlier this week.
The president said the fall of the government was neither "expected nor wanted" but asked the people to participate in the upcoming election.
On Tuesday, the Portuguese parliament passed a vote of no confidence in Prime Minister Luis Montenegro's center-right minority government after the opposition Socialists said they would seek a parliamentary inquiry into Montenegro's business dealings amid allegations of corruption.
