French President Emmanuel Macron said he communicates with deposed Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum "every day." Bazoum has been under house arrest since the military took power in the country in late July. Macron reiterated France's support for him and said that Paris does not recognize those who carried out the coup and that any decision on the matter by the French government will be made after consulting Bazoum.
The Nigerien military regime condemned Macron's support for Bazoum, denouncing it as "further blatant interference in Niger's domestic affairs." The regime also revoked the visa and diplomatic immunity of the French ambassador and ordered police to expel him from the country.
