French presidential candidates Francois Fillon and Emmanuel Macron commented on the United States military action in Syria which resulted in several Tomahawk missiles hitting an airbase and killing at least nine civilians.

Conservative candidate Fillon called the US strikes "understandable," but warned against the action resulting in "a direct confrontation of the the Western forces with those of Russia or Iran." Meanwhile, centrist Macron stated the international community should "take note from the American intervention" and organize a "coordinated action" in compliance with the United Nations mandate against the Assad regime in Syria. "The Syrian people have an enemy: Bashar Al-Assad," Macron claimed.

Earlier, far-right National Front's presidential candidate condemned the US military strikes, while France's President Francois Holland released a joint statement with German Chancellor Angela Merkel saying Assad is "responsible" for the events in the Middle Eastern country.
