News industry leader Mark Thompson has been appointed as chairman and CEO of CNN Worldwide, its parent company Warner Bros. Discovery announced on Wednesday. The appointment, which comes just under three months after Chris Licht left the role, will be effective on October 9.
"There isn't a more experienced, respected, or capable executive in the news business today than Mark, and we are thrilled to have him join our team and lead CNN Worldwide into the future," said David Zaslav, chief executive officer of Warner Bros. Discovery, in a press release.
Thompson is well known for his previous work at major media companies such as The New York Times, where he served as CEO and president from 2012 to 2020, and the BBC, where he was CEO from 2004 to 2012.
