US Republican Senator from Kentucky Mitch McConnell announced Thursday that he will not seek reelection next year. The decision comes after months of strained relations with top Republican Party officials and criticisms from President Donald Trump.
McConnell, the longest-serving Senate party leader in US history, played a key role in shaping the conservative judiciary and advancing Republican policies.
"Representing our commonwealth has been the honor of a lifetime. I will not seek this honor an eighth time. My current term in the Senate will be my last," McConnell will say in a speech which was sent to AP in advance.
