The United States Senate gave its final approval on Friday for a bipartisan bill that would increase the convictions for fentanyl trafficking, sending the bill to US President Donald Trump.
The bill passed with an 84-16 vote, with only some Democrats giving the opposing votes. It showed bigger Democratic support for the bill compared to a similar bill passed by House Republicans in 2023, which was stalled by the Democrats who had control of the Senate at the time, although it was backed by the Biden administration.
The HALT Fentanyl Act aims to permanently classify fentanyl-like substances into Schedule 1, which is a category reserved for the most dangerous drugs.
