McHenry temporarily takes over as speaker

Republican Representative of North Carolina Patrick McHenry (pictured left) assumed the role of interim Speaker following a motion to vacate the speakership, which ousted House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (pictured right).

McHenry, a close ally of McCarthy, reportedly topped his secret list of potential successors.

McCarthy was removed from office amid internal turmoil within the GOP regarding negotiations regarding the government spending package.
