The leader of Germany's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Friedrich Merz said that Russia and the United States are "coming together over the heads of Ukraine" shortly after his party's emerged as the winner in the country's snap general election on Sunday.
"My impression over the last few days is that Russia and America are coming together - over the heads of Ukraine and therefore also over the heads of Europe. That's why everyone is now looking at Germany. How quickly will the Germans be able to form a government after this complicated election result? That really is a priority for me now," Merz wrote on X.
Merz is a vocal supporter of Ukraine in the conflict with Russia and also spoke in favor of Berlin providing more military aid to Kiev.
