Microsoft estimates 8.5M devices affected in IT outage

Microsoft Corporation estimated on Saturday that approximately 8.5 million Windows devices were affected in the massive IT outage caused by CrowdStrike's latest update which paralyzed airports, banks, and payment systems globally.

This represents less than 1% of all Windows machines, Microsoft said, adding that "while the percentage was small, the broad economic and societal impacts reflect the use of CrowdStrike by enterprises that run many critical services." In addition, CrowdStrike assisted Microsoft in developing a "scalable solution" to expedite a fix for the "faulty update" affecting Microsoft's Azure infrastructure, the tech giant said in a blog post.

"This incident demonstrates the interconnected nature of our broad ecosystem — global cloud providers, software platforms, security vendors and other software vendors, and customers," Microsoft added.
