European Union's High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Federica Mogherini said that any measure which would put at risk Venezuela's President of the National Assembly Juan Guaido "would represent a major escalation of tensions and meet the firm condemnation of the international community." Guaido, who earlier proclaimed himself the interim president, left the country in spite of a travel ban imposed by Venezuela's Supreme Court and traveled to Colombia for a visit.
"The members of National Assembly enjoy constitutionally granted immunity that needs to be fully respected. They should be able to exercise their parliamentary mandate free of intimidation on them or their family members. The European Union will keep closely monitoring events in cooperation with the International Contact Group members and its regional and international partners," Mogherini stated.
