The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Monday it is renaming the monkeypox disease to mpox over "racist" connotations.
"When the outbreak of monkeypox expanded earlier this year, racist and stigmatizing language online, in other settings and in some communities was observed and reported to WHO," the WHO stated and noted it had to react.
The agency added that both names will be used as synonyms for the next year until "monkeypox is phased out."
