European Union's Economics Affairs Commissioner Pierre Moscovici stated on Thursday that France's temporary breach of the bloc's budget deficit rules is a possibility, media reported. According to the official, if such an event occurs it would be preferable for it to be limited and isolated breach.
Moscovici noted that it was premature to make any comments on whether the French deficit will exceed the 3% level, according to Reuters. His comments come after the commissioner said on Wednesday that French and Italian budget deficits will get "the same" treatment from the bloc.
French deficit became an issue after the country's President Emmanuel Macron announced earlier this week that the government decided to abandon the fuel price hikes amid mass protests in Paris.
