NATO is ready to create a new role in Kiev, according to US and alliance sources cited by The Wall Street Journal on Monday.
Namely, the move will include naming a senior civilian official in Kiev as part of an operation named Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine that seeks to transfer the responsibility held by the US army since February 2022 to the alliance in a possible scenario where former President Donald Trump returns to the White House. Additionally, NATO will start a new command in Wiesbaden, Germany, to coordinate military equipment supply and Ukrainian troops training.
A former US ambassador said that "a big reason for the change is to Trump-proof the assistance effort to Ukraine." “Rather than having Washington in charge of managing the training and assistance, NATO will be in charge. So even if the US reduces or withdraws support for the effort, it won’t be eliminated."
