New tariffs that the United States will introduce on Mexico are a response to the country's "export" of "illegal aliens," trade advisor to US President Donald Trump, Peter Navarro, told CNBC on Friday.
Navarro added that the measures are being introduced as a part of Trump's national emergency declaration in regard to the situation on the southern border of the US. The tariffs are being introduced as North American nations are attempting to adopt the US-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) trade deal as soon as possible.
Earlier, Trump announced he will be slapping 5% tariffs on all products coming in from Mexico as a response to many illegal immigrants gaining access to the US through Mexico. In March, Trump vetoed a Congressional repeal of his national emergency declaration.
