Badar Khan Suri, a researcher and fellow at Georgetown University, in the United States on a student visa, has been detained by federal immigration authorities, the Washington Post reported, citing his lawyer Hassan Ahmad.
In a post on X, Tricia McLaughlin, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security wrote that "Suri was a foreign exchange student at Georgetown University actively spreading Hamas propaganda and promoting antisemitism on social media," alleging that "Suri has close connections to a known or suspected terrorist, who is a senior advisor to Hamas. The Secretary of State issued a determination on March 15, 2025 that Suri’s activities and presence in the United States rendered him deportable under INA section 237(a)(4)(C)(I)."
Suri was arrested outside of his home in Arlington, Virginia and is currently awaiting his date in immigration court in a holding facility in Alexandria, Louisiana.
