New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell (pictured) said on Friday that everybody living or working outside of the city's "levee system," meant to protect against floods, should evacuate before the tropical storm Ida makes landfall.
"Now is the time," the mayor said at a press conference, urging people with serious medical conditions to leave the area as quickly as possible.
United States National Hurricane Center said previously that Ida could turn into a category 3 hurricane "with top winds of 120 mph" when it approached the US coast on Sunday.
