Member of North Ireland's Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Lagan Valley, Paul Givan, will succeed Arlene Foster and become the region's new First Minister, Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) Leader Edwin Poots (pictured) stated on Tuesday.

Givan previously served as Minister for Communities in the now-devolved Northern Ireland Executive, a former administrative branch of the assembly. He will be the first head of the region's government that was not the leader of the DUP at the time he was designated.

Arlene Foster resigned from the position of the First Minister in April amid the still ongoing tensions between the United Kingdom and the European Union over Northern Ireland's post-Brexit status.
