United States Vice President Mike Pence and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned on Thursday the "wrongful detention" of two Canadian citizens in China earlier this month and urged for their immediate release. Speaking during Pence's one-day visit to Ottawa, the two leaders stressed that China's actions are damaging its international reputation.

Turning to trade, the US vice president said that Trudeau "stayed firm" and drove a "hard bargain" throughout the efforts to renegotiate the NAFTA agreement to finally reach the United States - Mexico - Canada (USMCA) deal, which Pence described as a "historic opportunity" to strengthen ties between the three North American nations.
