United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo (pictured) revealed he had a "great" talk with Singapore’s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan regarding the South China Sea. He said the two expressed their mutual willingness to uphold international law and make an effort to promote "stability and prosperity" in the Indo-Pacific.

Several Asian nations have competing claims over territorial waters in the region with China recently taking steps towards achieving greater control over the lion's share of the sea.

US State Department had previously lambasted Beijing's maritime claims, after which the country urged Washington against taking sides on issues of territorial sovereignty or getting directly involved in said disputes.
