United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stated on Monday that his country would invest in North Korea in order to boost its economy if Pyongyang realizes its promise of denuclearization. During an interview with CNBC, the diplomat noted that he has spoken with North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un about the country's "brighter future" and the need for private investments and new economic opportunities.
Pompeo also said that Kim realizes the need towards a transition to a more open, market-based economy and that he is willing to consider changes such as the introduction of the private rules-based system and foreign investment.
The secretary of state also stressed that US President Donald Trump wants free trade for his country while his main objective remains the rebalancing of Washington's trade relationships with its existing partners. Pompeo noted that if the US gets more fair and reciprocal trade agreements, its bilateral ties with other countries will be bettered significantly.
