There were 418 oil rigs active in the United States on September 23, or 2 more than a week ago. The number of gas rigs rose by 3 to 92. In the comparable report from a year ago, there were 641 oil rigs and the number of gas units stood at 89 in the United States of America, according to Baker Hughes' Rotary Rig Count published on Friday.
The number of oil rigs in Canada was higher by 2, at a total of 77 operating on September 23. Canada had 66 oil rigs a year ago. There were 61 gas rigs in the current report, or 5 additional compared to the last week. Canada closed 49 gas rigs in the period of one year, when there were 110 operational.
West Texas Intermediate futures for November fell 3.33% to $44.51 a barrel, and international benchmark Brent for November delivery traded 3.35% lower at $45.93 a barrel on Nymex at 7:00 p.m. CET. Both crude types were, however, poised to gain for the week.
