Russia and North Korea are set to officially begin construction of a bridge across the Tumangang River, according to Russian Ambassador to Pyongyang Alexander Matsegora. In an interview with RIA Novosti on Thursday, Matsegora stated that while preparatory work is still underway, including finalizing designs and assembling construction teams, the project will soon move forward.
The ambassador described the bridge as the most significant bilateral cooperation effort "in decades." He also hinted at additional joint projects between Moscow and Pyongyang, though details remain undisclosed.
Earlier in March, South Korean agency SI Analytics suggested that the project may stem from Russia’s need for North Korean support amid heavy losses in Ukraine. However, the agency doubted the bridge would see substantial use in the near future or facilitate military shipments.
