Russia's mission to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) accused the United States on Monday of attempting to thwart the OPCW's investigation into the alleged chemical attack in the Syrian city of Douma. "The US is trying to undermine the authority of the OPCW to probe the alleged chemical attack in Douma before the mission even arrived in the city," the mission said.
Meanwhile, Russia promised it will not "interfere" with the organization's investigation in the Middle Eastern country, but noted its military is ready to provide transportation to the OPCW experts in Syria and ensure their security.
The OPCW earlier concluded that Syria has destroyed all of its chemical weapons stockpiles, but still decided to look into the latest allegations. Over the weekend, an OPCW expert team arrived in Damascus to investigate the Douma incident in spite of the United States-led strikes against Syria. Russia and Syria both claimed the West's military action against the Middle Eastern country was carried out with the goal to hinder the OPCW probe.
