Russia says Iran's attack a 'response to UNSC inaction'

Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya stated on Sunday that Iran's attack on Israel "did not happen in a vacuum" and was rather a reaction to "disgraceful inaction by the UN Security Council."

Nebenzya added during the UNSC meeting that the assault was a reaction to an "egregious attack" by Israel on Damascus. He went on to say that many of the UN member states lacked the courage to "state clearly" that Israel's military operation in the Gaza Strip is "unprecedented in terms of the number of victims." He stressed that Israel's defiance of UNSC resolutions is "obvious disrespect," and is not something "anyone should get away with."

"We call on parties to exercise restraint due to the obvious risk of the conflict escalating," Nebenzya said, calling for the international community to de-escalate the situation.
