Russia's Defense Ministry announced on Wednesday that the launch of its Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) was successful.

The test was carried out at the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in Russia's northwest. The weapon "is capable of hitting targets at long ranges using various flight paths," the ministry told Russian reporters.

Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated the military on the successful test, pointing out that the missile "is capable of overcoming all modern means of anti-missile defense" and that it will be unmatched in the world "for a long time." He stressed that the development of the missile would improve Russia's security and make all those who "try to threaten" Russia and use "aggressive rhetoric" against it reconsider their actions.
