NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said on Wednesday that the alliance "must make it work" with whoever wins the upcoming presidential election in the United States. Former US President and Republican nominee Donald Trump has been very critical of NATO during his first term in office and has gone as far as to say he would "encourage" Russia to "do whatever they want" to member states that do not contribute enough to the alliance's defense.
"I'm convinced everyone at NATO will work in a very positive and cooperative way with whoever will be the winner of that election," Rutte said, asserting that the alliance's collective defense enjoys bilateral support in the US. He stressed that a possible Russian victory in the war with Ukraine would be a security threat to the United States as well as Europe.
