South Korea's prosecutors opened a case with President Yoon Suk-yeol oficially named as a suspect on charges of insurrection and abuse of power over his attempt to impose martial law, Yonhap reported on Sunday.
"Multiple complaints have been filed regarding the president," Park Se-hyun, head of the special investigation unit handling the martial law case, said. "Procedurally, being named as a suspect is accurate when there are such filings," he added. When asked if Yoon faces the possibility of being arrested, Park declined to comment, The Chosun Daily reported. "However, we will conduct the investigation strictly according to the law and principles, regardless of the status or rank of those involved," he added.
Earlier, on Sunday, the leader of the ruling People Power Party (PPP) Han Dong-hoon vowed to "minimize the chaos for the Republic of Korea and its people, stabilize the political situation and restore liberal democracy" through an "orderly early departure of the president."
