The South Korean parliament passed a resolution on Tuesday to overturn President Yoon Suk-yeol's declaration of emergency martial law within the country "to eradicate pro-North Korea forces and protect free constitutional order."
"The martial law declaration is now invalid. Citizens, please remain calm. The National Assembly will protect democracy together with the people. Military and police personnel currently inside the National Assembly grounds are requested to leave immediately," the speaker of the National Assembly Woo Won-sik added.
The resolution to revoke martial law was approved by all 190 members present in the National Assembly, which comprises 300 seats. The opposition party currently controls 192 seats. According to the martial law act, should the assembly call for its termination, the president must comply "without delay."
