Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell noted in a letter to Majority Leader Chuck Schumer that GOP senators will not support "any bill that raises the debt ceiling without substantive spending and budget reforms."
According to a report published by The Hill on Friday, more than 40 GOP legislators signed the letter labeled as McConnell's most explicit statement to date about debt ceiling negotiations. Congress Republicans are united "in support of spending cuts and structural budget reform as a starting point for negotiations on the debt ceiling," the letter said.
The United States will likely start to default on its obligations in the summer or early fall if Congress doesn't reach a bipartisan agreement on the debt ceiling before that. However, there are reports President Joe Biden might turn to the 14th Amendment to ensure the federal government doesn't default in case Congress fails to reach a deal on time.
