United States President Donald Trump's nominee to lead the FBI, Kash Patel, won the backing of the Senate Judiciary Committee in a closely contested vote on Thursday.

The 12-10 vote paves the way for Patel's bid to move forward to a Senate confirmation vote, which could take place as early as next week.

The 44-year-old former federal prosecutor's nomination has been met with opposition and controversy since its announcement, being accused of "personally directing the ongoing purge of career civil servants" within the FBI.
