Senior Pentagon official reportedly visits Taiwan

United States Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for China Michael Chase is visiting Taiwan, the Financial Times reported on Friday. The Department of Defense did not comment on the alleged trip but it reiterated that the US government's "rock-solid" support for Taiwan "remains aligned against the current threat" posed by China.

Chase is the most senior Pentagon official to arrive in Taiwan since 2019, amid strained relations between the US and China over an alleged Chinese surveillance balloon shot down above US territory. Meanwhile, China sanctioned two US defense contractors on Thursday, accusing them of providing Taiwan with weapons.
