South Korea's capital Seoul issued a text alert to its citizens, urging them to prepare for a possible evacuation following North Korea's projectile launch.
Sirens were heard across the capital as South Korea reported that Pyongyang fired a "space launch vehicle" southward.
The launch comes after the North previously notified Japan of its plan to launch a spy satellite between May 31 and June 11.
