Argentine President Javier Milei signed a decree declaring a seven-day mourning period after the death of Pope Francis, who was born in the South American country, Government Spokesperson and Communications Officer Manuel Adorni confirmed in a tweet on Monday.
Meanwhile, Milei also took to X to express his "profound sorrow" over the pontiff's passing. "Despite differences that seem minor today, having been able to know him in his kindness and wisdom was a true honor for me," he wrote.
The late Pope was born as Jorge Mario Bergoglio in 1936 in Buenos Aires. He served as archbishop of Argentina's capital from 1998 to 2013, when he was elected the leader of the Roman Catholics, the first one from South America. Coincidentally, Pope Francis never visited his native country in that capacity, potentially over his strained relationship with Milei and his non-consecutive predecessors Nestor and Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner.
