Former British Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero Grant Shapps has been appointed as the new defense secretary to replace outgoing Ben Wallace after his formal resignation.
After the appointment was approved by King Charles III, Shapps will be changing departments for the second time during Rishi Sunak's administration since last February, when he was moved from the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy office to the energy department. During his role in the Transport office, Shapps suggested British defense spending must be raised to 3%. Former Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Children, Families and Wellbeing Claire Coutinho will replace Shapps as energy secretary.
"I am looking forward to working with the brave men and women of our Armed Forces who defend our nation's security. And continuing the UK's support for Ukraine in their fight against [Russian President Vladimir] Putin's barbaric invasion," noted Shapps on his social media.
