Shoygu: Zelensky's legitimacy obstacle to negotiations

Russia's Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoygu on Wednesday said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's legitimacy is one of the main obstacles to peace negotiations, as his term expired in May 2024.

Additionally, Shoygu said that Ukraine's constitution is restraining the country from moving towards peace negotiations. "There are several difficulties in Ukraine at once: a constitution that prohibits any territorial changes, a ban on negotiations with Russia, and the uncertainty of whom to talk to - the question of Zelensky's legitimacy," the official told reporters.

Shoygu's comments come after the first signs emerged that a long-term peace deal could be reached after both Zelensky and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin agreed to US President Donald Trump's proposal for a partial ceasefire.
