Spain: Ecofin extraordinary meeting to close pact possible

Spanish Economy Minister Nadia Calvino stated during her arrival at the Ecofin meeting on Friday that if a deal is not reached today, the agreement on the reform of the European Union's Stability and Growth Pact could be extended to an extraordinary meeting.

"We have made very significant progress; we were almost there but it was not possible to conclude In the next few days, we will continue all the pending consultations or those of a technical and political nature, including legal ones, and if necessary, we will also convene an extraordinary meeting of Ecofin in order to close a political agreement by the end of the year," Calvino noted.

On his part, European Commissioner for Economy Paolo Gentiloni expressed his confidence that an agreement on the Pact could be achieved "in the coming days." Similarly, Bruno Le Maire, the French finance minister, believes that the aforementioned agreement should be feasible before the end of the year."
