UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said Monday that his government is examining spending reductions across various departments ahead of Wednesday’s fiscal statement. "We're not going to alter the basics, but we are going to look across," he told BBC Radio, emphasizing efforts to improve efficiency.
Starmer stressed the need for the government to match businesses in adopting AI and technology for efficiency. "I think we're essentially asking businesses across the country to be more efficient, to look at AI and tech in the way that they do their business. I want the same challenge in Government, which is, why shouldn't we be more efficient?" he pointed out.
His remarks align with British Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves' Sunday pledge to cut government administrative costs by 15% and reduce civil service jobs by 10,000. Reeves has promised that these measures will strengthen the UK economy and improve living standards.
