North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg is set to remain in the position until April 2024, Welt am Sonntag reported on Sunday. He was supposed to step down in September, having already extended his tenure last year.
However, unnamed senior diplomats said there is agreement among NATO member states that Stoltenberg has made "outstanding achievements" in light of the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, which will mark its first anniversary on February 24. Sources added his remaining in power will also provide "stability at the head of the alliance in a challenging time." The report argued the Norwegian politician is likely to become president of the World Bank after he steps down, having been picked to lead the Bank of Norway in 2022.
