A number of states in the northeast of the United States were hit by a powerful snowstorm on Saturday, affecting some 55 million people. Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island have declared a state of emergency as the White House monitors the situation and warns of "extreme cold and hazardous conditions."
According to outage reports, over 100,000 households in Massachusetts, the state most heavily affected at the moment, have been left without power. Meanwhile, Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee said the storm brought "one of the top snowfalls in the 24-hour period in the history of the state of Rhode Island at this point in time." People in all affected states are asked not to leave their homes and to stay off the roads.
