Peter Murrell, the spouse of former Scottish First Minister and ex-Scottish National Party (SNP) leader Nicola Sturgeon, has been charged with alleged embezzlement of funds from the political party, where he previously held the position of chief executive.
The 59-year-old Murrell was released from custody following over 9-hour-long questioning as part of years-long Operation Branchform. In July 2021, Police Scotland initiated a formal investigation into the financial affairs of the SNP following allegations that a sum of over £600,000 had been potentially misallocated towards activities beyond its intended purpose.
Last February, Sturgeon resigned as Scotland's first minister and the party's leader. Subsequently, her husband parted ways with the party just a month later.
