British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has requested his independent ethics adviser look into former British Chancellor of the Exchequer Nadhim Zahawi's tax affairs, BBC reported on Monday.
According to the reports, the prime minister is quoted as saying "clearly in this [Zahawi's] case there are questions that need answering." Sunak's order comes amid calls for Zahawi, who now serves as minister without portfolio and Conservative Party chairman, to resign over accusations that he paid HM Revenue and Customs to end a tax dispute.
Two days ago, the minister denied intentional misconduct, saying that the error regarding taxes was "careless and not deliberate," stressing that he "settled the matter and pay what they said was due" before being appointed by Sunak.
