Syrian FM on de-escalation deal: No UN supervision

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem stated on Monday during a news conference in Damascus that the presence of international forces under UN supervision is not included in last week's agreement made by Russia, Iran and Turkey. The deal on four safe zones signed in Astana, Kazakhstan specifies the use of "military police" in observation centers in these de-escalation areas.

Al-Moallem didn't explain who the military police will be, but Russian observers that are already on the ground seem as a most probable solution. "There are still logistical details that will be discussed in Damascus and we will see the extent of commitment to this agreement, he commented on the success of the deal.

The United States Department of State said last week it supports “any effort that can genuinely de-escalate the violence in Syria,” but expressed worries about Iran as a guarantor and claimed the country’s actions in Syria “only contributed to the violence, not stopped it.”
