Australian mobile network operator TPG Telecom Ltd. will not be rolling out its $1 billion mobile network following a ban by the Australian government on the use of Huawei equipment, various Australian and international media reported on Tuesday.
The company said that, since a key reason for the selection of Huawei equipment was the simple upgrade path to 5G it offered, it does not "make commercial sense" to continue with the project in the light of the Australian government's ban on Huawei equipment. TPG made the announcement after having invested around 100 million Australian dollars ($72 million) in the network rollout.
The news came after Vodafone put the installation of Huawei equipment on hold last week over similar concerns. The Chinese smartphone maker's equipment has been banned in various countries apart from Australia, including the United States, Japan and Belgium.
